5th of July

We've done a lot of talking about family finances and our desire to be debt-free by Jan. 09 (so Daddy can retire from the military). We discussed ways to cut down expenses, and spend more time at home. The girls are skipping the next long-distance dance competition and we were putting our trip to the local theme park off this year. Nana decided to bless us by paying for that trip anyway. ~smile~ Kristianna needs oral surgery, which is going to cost a fortune. I need some tooth work, the a/c is down (with 100+ weather!) and Nick's Bronco is leaking oil. Ugh. BUT we are blessed, and we know it.

We spent 3 hours at our favorite local lake, taking turns riding the jet-ski and jumping off it into the cool water (temp. was over 100 today). All the children, except Kristianna, rented 2 paddle boats and paddled around the lake inlets... watching the wildlife. Tons of birds, herons, Osprey, baby Tree Swallows, muskrat, turtles and fish. So much fun! Kristianna didn't feel well so she stayed shore-side and read out of my 'Above Rubies' and NATHHAN (children w/ special needs) magazines. Daydreaming of having at least 10 children before she is 30. Hmm. The other children did so much swimming they are waterlogged.

This evening we read 'Jamberry' by Bruce Degen, identifying different kinds of berries. We learned that blackberries are often wild, and spread by the droppings of birds. Also that grasshoppers (and other insects) are a welcome, nutritious treat in other countries. We tried "watercoloring" with different types of berries, looked up different kinds of grasshoppers online, and then had a big bowl of berries and whipped cream. Linnea's favorite. Yum!!!
